OMD Wine Distributors was founded in April of 2023 by Kris McKinney and Trevor McKinney, his middle son. OMD is Kris’s passion project. He leads the company and is the primary decision-maker. 

The name OMD is short for OldMotoDude and reflects Kris’ interest in vintage motorcycles, having grown up riding dirt bikes in the deserts of Southern California. With the start-up of the company moving fast, a name needed to be chosen. The OMD moniker was already being used for Kris’ vintage motorcycle online presence and was a natural choice for the business.

Kris lives with his wife, Dawn, in Richland, Washington and they are now splitting their time between their Washington home and Boise, Idaho where the company is based.

Trevor lives in Boise with his wife and two sons. He has been an integral part of the business, doing all the legwork to get OMD operational. He has since chosen to move on to begin a new business venture.

Kris and Dawn’s wine journey began in the 1990’s and really took root in the 2000’s. It started at social gatherings with other parents from their children’s high school where Washington State wines were the predominant adult beverage. Discovering a love for Washington wines, Kris and Dawn began exploring Red Mountain and Walla Walla wineries, joining a few wine clubs in those areas. Within a few years Trevor was recruited to play college baseball at one of the Idaho Treasure Valley Universities. Kris and Dawn spent many weekends traveling to the area to watch his games. Visits continued through the years as Trevor returned to the Boise area after graduating, eventually marrying, starting a family and having Kris and Dawn’s two grandchildren.

Fast forward a few years to 2009. New neighbors moved in next door to Kris and Dawn. Outdoor cookouts and dinners with them soon became the norm as they were a fun couple, and both food and wine lovers. The husband happened to be the new head of Wine Science and Viticulture at Washington State University (WSU). Great food (the neighbors were excellent cooks) was paired with great wine, and Kris and Dawn’s wine education accelerated. Spending many holidays and events together with family in Boise, Kris and Dawn perused the area grocery stores and wine shops looking for wine to go with dinners. They found they could not find many of the boutique Washington wines they loved. They asked “why not” of the Boise shop owners and their wine-maker friends in Washington State. They received the same answer…lack of distribution because of the small size and lower production of boutique wineries.

For Kris this was an “ah ha” moment! Trevor joined him, and they jumped into distribution with both feet, Dawn tagging along for fun. From this humble start OMD Wines now distributes many of the best Northwest boutique wines. In 2024 they added premier wines from California and Oregon as well. With Trevor’s choice to move on, Dawn is now the bookkeeper for OMD in addition to already picking up the wines from the OMD-distributed wineries. Kris continues contacting the wineries and delivering the wines to customers. The past few years have been a tremendous learning curve for Kris and Dawn, with the hope of continually improving their business to best represent the wineries they distribute, and the customers they serve.
